in the summer of 2002, 16 year old brian banks made out with a girl named wanetta gibson in a stairwell at school and was later accused of rape by the girl. although innocent, he was convicted. he served 5 years in jail, had to register as a sex offender, and wore a gps ankle bracelet for another five years. what’s crazy about this story isn’t just the false rape accusation though.
But then, last year, a chunk of luck fell from the stars. Out of the blue, Gibson, then 24, sent Banks a Facebook friend request.
Banks slammed the laptop cover down and jumped out of his chair. Was somebody playing a joke on him?
He looked again. Amazing. Gibson had typed, “Let’s let bygones be bygones.”
after nearly 10 years, the girl who falsely accused him of rape and cost him 10 years of his life sent him a friend request!? are you kidding me?
however, there is some good that came out of the request. he accepted it and hired a private investigator, who videotaped gibson admitting that banks did not rape her. with the new evidence, he got his conviction overturned and is now a free man. since he was a talented prospect before his conviction, nfl teams are now reaching out to him with opportunities to try out.
it’s good to know that some stories like these have happy endings.
